29 2013 One of the sub topics we discussed under Sports and
Social media was What the Media Chooses
to Show Us.
I came across a great article in the SBJ journal by
Anna Hruska on September 16 013 titled “Women in the Sports World.” I believe this is a great topic
to discuss on media and sport.
In our notes we talked how
Women have less
air time for sport’s
There's limited coverage of women’s team sports
The media
focuses on women’s personal life/appearance more than the sport they play.
Women may not be the faces
of the sport world but, their definitely are some women who stand out in sport.
Anna Hrushka talks about 3 women who are the face of the sport world such as Clair
Williams, Nawal El Moutawakel and Monika Stabb. Clair who is a team principle
at Williams F1 is one out of two of the only women to hold this important role.Nawal
who is from Casablanca, Morocco grew into the sport industry as a little girl
when she was the first Arab Muslim to win the Olympic gold. 30 years later she’s
remains a symbol for female Arab world. She also is the vice president of the
IOC Executive Committee. So as you can see though these women may have come
across a lot of barriers in their lives they are still promoting a change for
women in the sports world today. To me this is critical for all women trying to
pursue a career in sports. The media doesn't’t show women a lot but, if enough
women show that their important enough to sport the media will have to look at
women. Coakley’s text says that “Many male executives of large media
corporations are dedicated sports fans and they like to be associated with
sports as sponsors (Pg. 414).” I believe most of this statement to be true, men
are the face of sport but, who says women can’t be too. In this video taken in
2010 about Raelee Tuckerman you can see how important sport is to women when their
broadcasted on television.
